After postponing his performance for Home- coming last September, internationally renowned comedian Gabriel Iglesias has finally made his way to RIC. The California-based Latino comedian will be at Roberts Hall this Wednesday, April 18, and all RIC students are strongly encouraged to see this performance firsthand.
Gaining massive popularity for his Comedy Central specials such as “Hot and Fluffy” and “I’m Not Fat…I’m Fluffy,” the thirty-three year old Gabriel Iglesias has been performing comedy since 1997. His routines are usually made up of impersonations, storytelling, and satire of either current events or his own personal life, and much of his jokes involve a humorous look at his weight.
“I think it’s important that RIC is finally able to put the show on,” said Nicole Osti, RIC Junior majoring Elementary Education, “I think it’s good for the college.”
“He’s a funny guy, and it makes me feel like we’re important,” said Kerstyn Desjardin, RIC Senior majoring in English. “It’s pretty cool that he’s coming.”
Perhaps the most well-known joke in Iglesias’ repertoire is the “five levels of fatness” joke, which starts at big, then goes healthy, husky, fluffy (how Iglesias identifies himself), and ends at DAAAYUM! Iglesias also makes jokes about his Latino ethnicity, with his parents being immigrants from Mexico. Iglesias comedy routines often prove themselves as good-humored and positive, and Iglesias is not the kind of comedian that depends on vulgarity and crude humor to make an audience laugh.
“I unfortunately cannot attend, but I think it is great that he is coming,” said Mary Rocha, a RIC junior major- ing in sociology and minoring in theater “It’s been an anticipated event for quite some time now. A lot of my friends really enjoy him, and I think his stand up show is pretty funny.”
Originally meant to perform at RIC last September, Iglesias had to cancel due to a movie production. Now per- forming in April will give RIC-End that much more flair.
Two weeks after Iglesias brings laughs to Roberts, Gym Class Heroes will be rocking out on Thursday. May 3rd. Both tickets are available at the Roberts Hall Box Of- fice, and Gabriel Iglesias tickets are only $15 for students.
Throughout his distinguished career, Gabriel Iglesias has made several appearances on several television shows, including All That, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, the Late Show, My Wife and Kids and Family Guy. Iglesias was also a finalist in the show Last Comic Standing, and was the first contestant to ever be disqualified after he used a blackberry to contact his family, which was a contract violation. Even after the disqualification, Iglesias has proven himself as one of the best comedians in the United States and his standup has been aired on Comedy Central several times.
It might have taken awhile, but the renowned Gabriel Iglesias is finally making his way to the Roberts Hall Auditorium. Tickets are $15 and laughs are guaranteed, so unless you’re too fat to fit through the door you definitely want to make you way down.
